Why study in Malaysia

Study cost in Malaysia

Tuition fee isn’t same in all the universities and study programs. It usually varies and depend on the chosen university and course. The currency used in Malaysia is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). As a developed country the education cost in Malaysia is a little higher than many others. An average cost in the public universities may be MYR7000 per year for the bachelor’s degree and for the Master’s degree it can be MYR 11000 per year. But in the private universities cost will be much higher. Tuition fees for the subjects of medicine and engineering will much higher than this range.

Part-time job

All international students studying at public or private higher education institutions are allowed to work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week ONLY during semester breaks or holidays of more than 7 days at restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels as long as their student passes remain valid. Please note that prior approval from the Department of Immigration is required.

International students are NOT permitted to work as cashiers. In addition, in the hotel sector, international students are NOT allowed to work as singers, masseurs, musicians or GROs (Guest Relation Officers). International students are not allowed to engage in any job or activity deemed to be immoral.

Applications to work part time must be made through the educational institution at which the international students are enrolled. The international student needs to be present with the representative of the education institution at the Immigration Department of Malaysia in order to submit an application for part time work.

Languages in Malaysia

Malay is the official language of Malaysia. About half of the population here speaks Malay. . There are about 6 more common languages ​​in Malaysia. Among them are various Chinese language dialects, Buginese language, Daik language, Javanese language and Tamil language. Bazaar Malay language is widely used as the language of multinational markets and is used as the universal language or Lingua Franca in Sabah province. The official language is Bahasa Malaysia. However, people of different ethnicities speak their own languages. English is taught as a second language from the school level. English is widely used for daily communication and business needs.

Though there’re several languages in Malaysia the courses are usually taught in English. If your native language is English you won’t need to submit any language course certificate. But if your native language isn’t English you must have to show your proficiency in English whether you’ve skill of receiving the lecture provided in English.

Cost of living

Though the lifestyle in Malaysia is of high standard but the cost isn’t too higher like the USA or UK. You may budget an average amount of MYR10000 – MYR15000 per year including the cost of food, travel and accommodation. This cost may less in the smaller cities higher in the larger cities. Moreover, cost of daily life will depend on how you’ll like to expense for yourself. International student will need to have a health insurance for the full course time in Malaysia.

Scholarships

A scholarship or grant can greatly help a student to study abroad in case of getting higher degree. Malaysian universities also not different from this system. Many universities declare several scholarships individually for both home and international students.

The Government of Malaysia also declare scholarships and funds for international students. One of them is known as Malaysian CSFP (Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan).
In order to get scholarship student must have to meet the determined eligibility requirements. If you can achieve a scholarship you’ll be able to save your study, living and accommodation cost.

Requirements to Apply for a Malaysian Student Visa:

Student visa application form completed and signed by the applicant
Offer letter from the chosen educational institution approved by the pass & permit division in the Immigration Headquarters of Malaysia
Two passport sized photographs
Two photocopies of your Passport
Academic transcript(s) of records
Proof of full-time course of study approved by the Minister of Home Affairs
Proof of financial capability to meet course and other expenses
Health certificate
Evidence of security and personal bond
Students have to show their approval letters upon arrival

Steps in Applying for a Student pass after arriving in Malaysia and cost:

The Malaysian government has made the process of the application of student visa and pass easily for anyone who wants to study in the country, as students do not have to contact their local Embassy of Malaysia no more.

MYR 1,060 (approximately USD 240) non-refundable visa processing fee, although selected institutions are entitled to rebates.
MYR 579 for subsequent document processing, refundable in the event of an unsuccessful application.

The medical insurance part of the visa application process:

It is compulsory for every student entering Malaysia to have medical insurance. You will be insured from the date you enter Malaysia if you inform your institution of the date as soon as you arrive. All international students must be covered by a locally purchased medical health insurance scheme. An international student, through his/her educational institution, can opt to purchase Medical Insurance.

Health Screening Required:

To ensure that you have a clean bill of health, you will be required to undergo a medical screening upon arrival in Malaysia (post-arrival) at one of Education Malaysia Global Services’ registered panel clinics or health centres. Effective 01 June 2019, pre-arrival medical screening is no longer required. However, Students are required to submit a health declaration form for the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) application. If in doubt of anything required in the declaration form, please obtain consultation from your local doctor. Please note that making a false declaration, including in the health declaration form, is an offence under the Laws of Malaysia. Doing so may result in prosecution and deportation i.e. removal from Malaysia.
